Amazon European Marketplaces consists of eight countries located across the EU, serving more than 500 million people, compared to the 300 million Amazon serves in the US, making Europe the go-to market for US sellers looking to enter new markets.

Selling on the European Amazon marketplace comes with amazing benefits including, access to a larger clientele and to other European marketplaces with one Amazon account.

  • In 2020, Amazon Spain invested more than 2.5 Billion Euros in an attempt to reach their customers and improve their services, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to this, the company launched two fulfilment centres and three delivery stations located across Spain. Nearing the end of 2020, Amazon has become the largest job creation vehicle in Spain which has expanded to more than 12,000 people.

Events:

  • Premium Day, 15 July, 2015 – this even was hosted to celebrate Amazon’s 20th birthday with its premium customers which consisted of customer receiving special offerings.
  • Casa Amazon, 21 November to 25, 2018 – this was the first pop-up store in Spain that provided insight to customers regarding specials. The event also included activities for those who attended, including workshops, and an introduction to new products/brands, among other exciting and new things.
  • Prime Day Live, 15 June, 2021 – This was Amazon’s music event which was hosted by some well-known artists.

Controversies:

  • Since 2011, when Amazon Spain was launched, there has been many controversies and criticism the company received by the public regarding some of their actions. In December 2011, only a few months after Amazon Spain launched, they received negative responses from small businesses regarding a once-off deal they listed in aid of promoting its new Price Check application; customers were offered a $5 discount for purchasing the item on Amazon instead. This led to companies like Taap, eBay, and Groupon offering customers a $10 discount to counter the actions of Amazon and ensure their customers continued to purchase with them.
  • Further in July 2014, a lawsuit against Amazon Spain was filed by the Federal Trade Commission for promoting in-app purchases to underage children without their parental consent.
  • In 2019, Amazon banned skin-lightening and racist-related products that could negatively have affected the health of consumers.

  • In 2020, COVID-19 and local regulations has led Amazon France to have major setbacks on many levels within the company. Amazon has announced that all operations will be temporarily stopped after a court ruled that Amazon France has failed to provide proper protection to the warehouse workers against the contraction of the coronavirus. The court has further decided that delivered on all food, medical, and hygiene products will be stopped until the issue has been addressed and resolved by Amazon France. These setbacks have further resulted in Amazon France missing its set target for internal package shipments, valued at around 229 million euros, falling way under the target of 416 million euros.

  • In 2016, Amazon officially launched in Netherlands after the launch of their Dutch domain name, although Amazon served the Dutch market for many years before this. This led to the Dutch market generating more than €300 million.
  • In 2018, Amazon started focusing on their Dutch market by including a translation for product pages from German to Dutch. Furthermore, Amazon Netherlands added iDeal as one of their payment options and made Amazon Prime Day available for the entire Netherlands since the start of 2018.

  • In 2020, Amazon has made a public announcement stating that they will be expanding their operations into the Netherlands. Since this is all brand new, the location for warehouses and fulfilment locations hasn’t been established yet, although it is believed that these will be located in Schiphol Logistics Park, known as one of the business parks in Rozenburg, Netherlands. Until Amazon Netherlands has established this location, customers are advised to use their nearest warehouses/fulfilment centres in France and Germany.

  • In 2021, Italy made major headlines all over Amazon news. It is believed that Italy fined Amazon around $1.3 billion as a result of abusing its dominant market position by pushing third-party sellers to make use of Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA)’s logistic services. Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato (AGCM), the Italian authority, states that third-party sellers don’t get the same treatment when using their logistics services or the FBA. However, Amazon strongly disagrees with this decision and would appeal to resolve the unjust matter.
